Icicle Text - Step 1
1. Create a new 165×165 pixel document with a resolution of 100 and name it Icicles. Now press D and fill the document (with Black). Then create a new layer. Next, create a horizontal type mask, press X and then fill (with white). Load the selection of the layer wit the text on it. Show channels and create a new channel. Press D and then X on keyboard to reset colors to white and black. Fill the selection with white. Show layers and select the text layer and merge the layers.

Icicle Text - Step 2

2. Show Channels, then load the selection from the ‘alpha’ layer you made earlier. Show layers then inverse the selection. Next apply a crystalize filter with settings [Cell Size: 10]. Keep the selection for next step.

Icicle Text - Step 3
3. Now inverse the selection again, and apply a noise filter with settings [Amount: 10-20%, Distribution: Uniform, and ‘Monochromatic’ checked]. You can change the amount of noise depending on how chunky you want your ice to look. Next, apply a gaussion
blur
with settings [Radius: 1].

Icicle Text - Step 4
4. Next you deselect, then adjust the curves and make it very similar to THESE SETTINGS. Or download icicle.zip which contains a premade curves file.

Icicle Text - Step 5
5. Now rotate the canvas 90° CW (clock-wise). Then apply a wind filter with settings [Method: Wind, Direction: From the Right].

Icicle Text - Step 6
6. Finally rotate the canvas 90° CCW (counter clock-wise). You can add color to the image by, creating a new layer and filling it with a color of your choice. Then set that layers blending mode to ‘Color’.

There you have it, a cool icicle text effect, which can be used on interfaces and graphics as well. For another neat effect, try putting the text on a tilt then adding the icicle, it gives cool effect.

I found a great tutorial here (http://www.tutorialized.com/view/tutorial/Making-a-Cool-3D-Sphere-in-Photoshop/7570) that I think you did. I want to create the same look for a triangle and an octagon. I’ve been trying for the last five hours to do so with no luck. Any ideas??? Much appreciated!!!

I’m having trouble with the last step and adding color. I’ve gotten the effect I want but I want to add a blueish color to the icecles. I add the new layer but the channels changes from alpha to the rest of them and the icicles effect is gone. Any suggestions?

Great look by the way!

I’m also having trouble adding the color as well, same issue as Gagne9393. I’m trying to make a graphic for my site @ www.santacon.info Haven’t decided if I want to do Red or Blue like yours… either way I need a red matte for the background.

The effect is quite good. When I created the new layer with blending mode set to color… all the effects dissappear. What might I be doing wrong?

I’m into Linux as well. Big Ubuntu fan, I heard mint was good as well. I’m currently using a Mac as my desktop and I’m pretty happy with it too. Thanks.

The final step. 6a) Before you add the color layer, select all, copy the alpha channel image you have built, create a new layer, and paste the image into that layer, THEN add another layer with color. That is the step that Gagne9393 and Johnny were looking for.

Ho, Ho, Ho and Merry Christmas
