Well it has been a while since I’ve enjoyed the walk to and from work in the winter, but today was one of those days. The weather forecast predicts a lot of snow for today. I typically expect freezing head winds and a numb face when I arrive at work. But when I got outside, it was one of those days I was actually glad that I live in a place with snow. The snow today was similar to the kinda you see in movies or cartoons, journeying slowly from the sky to the earth with a slight wind pushing it to one side. The flakes were the large fluffy ones which make the ground seem like one giant pillow. I’m usually greeted by a huge blast of icy cold air when I open the door, but today there was a gentle wind, a welcomed change. The cars driving by on the road didn’t make the usual mid to high pitched noise they usually do. The cars were rolling on a nice thick layer of snow, which made a low, soothing, crunching noise. Everything seems bliss when it is so quiet. Usually when walking up the road to work I’m greeted by a strong north westerly wind that makes the -5 ° C seem like -15 °. That is the part of winter I hate, and I often think about warmer climates while walking. The usual cold winds makes me put my hands in my pockets, my chin to my chest, and shrug my shoulders to block as much wind as possible. But today the breeze was not cold at all, so I could walk with my head up and arms swaying as if I was walking in the summer. It is days like this that make me happy to live this far above the equator, and it was well needed, I was beginning to forget how great the winter can be… sometimes ;).
