Major Release: TweakEEE Beta 0.4
April 19th, 2008

Latest Version (0.4.1)

[Update Oct 1, 2008] If you found this application useful then please donate. I would like to develop a TweakEEE application for the eeepc 901/1000H (atom based) linux versions, so by donating you could help me save enough for an eeepc 901/1000H. (Donate button on the right Navigation bar)[End Update]

Old Release

The next version of Tweakeee is released. Granted this release isn’t a large as 0.3 was, there are still lots of improvements and added software. Fixed some of the scripts used as well as updated the lid_toggle script to be alot more responsive. For all changes read the Features/Changes below.

TweakEEE Beta 0.4 Preview 1

Feature Updates/Fixes:

  • Updated eeeWeather to 0.57. Added toggle checkbox to correspond to the -t flag. weather.dat also updated to the lastest ICAO txt file (April 8th).
  • Changed addparcel.py to not use sudo, this means that simpleui.rc will remain chowned by user and not use root. This allows it to play nicely with emeditor.
  • Fixed the Enable ShowStartMenu button. In 0.3 it always restarts IceWM even if no settings are changed.
  • Install Stardict, and add dictionaries with ease by using file chooser dialog.
  • Improved the Lid Toggle shell script. It was often very slow to actually perform the lidbtn.sh update after choosing an option (up to 20 seconds).
  • Removed toggling webcam on and off. (I would prefer to use eeecamtray but I had issues with it, so I will have to omit it for the time being).
  • Added install for Digikam
  • Added install for EMEditor
  • Added install for Google Earth w/fix
  • Added install for SuperTux
  • Added install for GnoCHM
  • Added install for Firefox 3 Beta 5
  • Added install for EEEControl
  • Added install for GPRS Config Utility
  • Added install for MS Core Fonts
  • Added install for basKet
  • Added install for Gweled

Installation Instructions

If you are upgrading from previous version, don’t worry about removing it. Proceed with the new installation as if you never had an older version. The installer will do everything necessary.
**NOTE: If you are running a 2G Surf it by default doesn’t come with python-gtk2 (the GUI environment). Luckily this is already located on the official asus eeepc repos so installing it is simple. Follow my steps above and you should get the package no problem.

First Method:

  • Download the deb file to My Documents, or wherever your default download directory goes.
  • Once downloaded, open up File Manager ( Work tab, File Manager )
  • Then go into My Documents Folder, and you should see the deb file. Right click the file and near the bottom of the popup options you should see ‘Install Deb….’ Choose that option, and it should prompt you for an administrator password.
  • Enter the administrator password and then it will install. During this time just be patient, a window will popup saying you need to restart. Just click ok, and CONTINUE WAITING. A Second window will eventually popup saying it has completed. Now you can reboot.
  • To run the program, you can either type in a terminal tweakeee or in the Settings tab there should be an icon for TweakEEE

Second Method

  • Open a terminal (Ctrl + alt + t)
  • Enter the command wget http://www.infinitedesigns.org/eeepc/tweakeee_0.4-0.i386.deb
  • Next enter the command chmod +x tweakeee_0.4-0.i386.deb
  • Finally Enter this command to start the installation sudo dpkg -i tweakeee_0.4-0.i386.deb
  • To run the program, you can either type in a terminal tweakeee or in the Settings tab there should be an icon for TweakEEE

FAQ: TweakEEE Isn’t Opening after I install

If you are one of those 2G or European owners, (and even non North American perhaps, hard to keep track of which EEE’s sold in which regions are bundled with what software and libraries) and you install TweakEEE and then execute the program but nothing happens, then you will have to follow these steps.

  • Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t)
  • Enter the command fix_tweakeee
  • Make sure you have an internet connection before starting. It will ask you for a secret word. The secret word is tweak
  • Now it will wget some deb packages from the official asus xandros repos. Let it do it’s magic. It will say you can start tweakeee when done
  • When it is done, either click the tweakeee icon in Settings or enter the command tweakeee

Known Issues:

  • When using the install and add icon buttons in software tab, sometimes if the main window loses focus, it will still open but everything is greyed out. The program is running fine, I find that clicking in the upper left corner of the TweakEEE window to “activate” the open file combo box will re-focus the main window. This has to do with the threading of the secondary dialog box popup.

Thanks:
A Thanks goes out to eeeuser community. If it weren’t for them this program would have never been made. Also a special thanks goes out to SublimePorte of eeeuser community. Another Thanks to Zinni from ZinniDesigns, who created a nice looking Theme package which is used in the program (beta version 0.2+). And I can’t forget active members of the eeeuser community (Niel [Both of them, forgot there were two], lordfish, anthondya, username) and anybody else who helps me debug TweakEEE. Forgive me if I’ve forgotten your name, it wasn’t intentional, I was just writing this quickly.

It seemed to be a bit more unstable, as I had to reboot a lot, otherwise it worked great and I got a ton of new apps. Also, I could not add an icon for google earth 4.2. Any chance you could add briquolo (http://briquolo.free.fr/en/index.html) as a game? It works great on the eee.

Also, how about some video editing apps?

Great job, all in all. This program was one of my main influences to stay on Linux and not install Windows.

Thanks, would love to see smaller icons, not sure if you can add that option in, or if its something I can do myself.

Thanks for the hard work

Hi,

this is a great app! thanks! One question though… I see when you update the repository list you download it from the asus website… nothing wrong with that.. however i´m using a 900…. and the url for that is p900 not p701… perhaps a question of what type you are using would be inplace???

and another thing… when installing it doesn´t recognize its a dutch xandros (yes, i prefer english myself… but what the heck), and therefor the icon isn´t visible in the settings tab (settings == instellingen in dutch)

cheers!

Hey Marf-

I installed the program and it works great, except for one little thing…I changed my computer name, and didn’t see the little note about it creating a pop-up message about DCOP. Now I can’t get rid of the pop-up.

Any help?

look at the /etc/hostname file. It may have bad text in it. The text file should have 1 line which is the name of the computer.

Installed tweakeee today on my new T1000. Tried to install PCMan and its icon. Everything looks like it worked OK, but PCMan is nowhere to be found. I haven’t tried other package installs. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Jim

If you type pcmanfm in the terminal, does it show up?

Jim Brooking

Yes - with a warning message saying pcmanfm:6950 program_name not supported, but it opened anyway. Closed pcmanfm and tried again: bash said command not found. Tried sudo pcmanfm and got pcmanfm:8737 program_name not supported, but opened in /root.

Well if it opens with that error, I’d say ignore the error. As to getting an icon to show up, well I assume that Asus has changed their simpleui.rc “xml”. In this case you will have top open the file in your favorite text editor /home/user/.AsusLauncher/simpleui.rc. Then scroll to the bottom and look for the added “PcMan FM” entry. The differences are documented here. Since my program was written for eeepc 701, I think asus has changed the OS for the Atom based eeepc. So if you check out this page http://wiki.eeeuser.com/list:simpleui.rc they explain it. Its not too difficult to add an entry at all.

Hello there,

you have an attribute error on installing (therefor it won’t) Emeditor. There are a couple of small bugs otherwise, not really a problem. Nice program, and above all, good idea to pack these goodies together. I am using a 901 atom…

Kind regards

I need urgently to get GIMP installed on a eeePC (I am a teacher) but I can’t open a terminal as Ctrl+Alt+T does nothing on my eee PC. Right clicking on the deb file offers no install option either.
Any ideas? Txs in advance, Steve

I just tried this release.
apt didn’t like it
1- The debian repository points to stable : this is, I think, not correct since stable is now lenny, you want to point to etch.
2- The xandros repository is not accessible. I get 403 errors.
I didn’t find a fix for this one.

I have downloaded TWEAKEEE and installed because I’d like VLC on my 701 4G Surf (Linux)

The problem seems to be that I am running (for some reason) out of memory when reloading the repositories. So the installation of VLC hangs for the obvious reason.

TWEAKEEE asks for all its repositories to be enabled before allowing VLC to be installed. I suspect that all will be fine if just the repository in which VLC resides is specified. Do you know that repository.

Delighted with TWEAKEEE but would be even more delighted in I could get it to install VLC.

Any further suggestions.?????

I’ve stopped development on this project a while ago. There was just too many revisions and it would have ended up being costly to try and support all variations of the eeepc. I recommend going to http://wiki.eeeuser.com/ for the latest guides on how to customize your eeepc.

I figured that. Many thanks for your good work. I installed VLC elsewise. I’ll keep Tweakee installed just in case there are other needs. I hope you enjoyed developing it.
